Supporting Our Youth, Strengthening Our Community

Napolean Ohio Baseball Field

At Vernon Nagel, we believe in more than just building structures—we believe in building communities. When the opportunity arose to help restore the Napoleon Baseball Field, we didn’t hesitate to answer the call. The field, a cornerstone of local sports and community gatherings, had fallen into disrepair. Thanks to a collaborative effort led by Kyle Borstelman of Gerken Paving, the vision to bring it back to life became a reality, and we’re proud to have played a pivotal role in this transformation.

Deep Roots in Napoleon: A Call We Were Honored to Answer

Established in 1947 by Mr. Vernon Nagel, our company began by constructing farm ponds and installing field tiles for the local farming community. Incorporated in 1960, we expanded our services throughout the 1960s and 70s to include state and municipal roadway and bridge projects across Ohio. As a family-owned business now led by the third generation, with Scott Nagel as President and Marc Nagel as Vice President, we have remained committed to serving Napoleon and the surrounding areas for over seven decades.

When we were approached to contribute to this important project, we knew we wanted to make an impact. Vernon Nagel was called upon to deliver expertise in:

  • Excavation: Preparing the site for construction and creating a solid foundation.

  • Drainage Systems: Installing advanced solutions to prevent waterlogging and ensure the field stays game-ready in all conditions.

  • Concrete Retaining Walls: Constructing walls to support the sunken field design, which enhances spectator views and creates a unique “bleacher effect.”

“As a company that has been part of this community for decades, supporting our youth and giving back is at the heart of what we do,” said Scott Nagel, President of Vernon Nagel. “It’s an honor to play a role in creating a space where kids can dream big and where families can come together.”

A Modern Ballpark Built for the Future

The Napoleon Baseball Field is more than just a field—it’s a gathering place, a source of pride, and a symbol of what can be achieved when businesses and community members unite.

The new field now features:

  • Advanced drainage systems to ensure optimal playability, even after heavy rain.

  • Meticulously constructed concrete retaining walls to support the sunken field design and provide durability for years to come.

  • Improved amenities, including a new press box, restrooms, concession stand, fencing, and backstop netting.

Transforming Challenges into Opportunities

One of the standout features of the project was the sunken field design, which required lowering the field by four feet. This created challenges, but it also provided the opportunity to:

  • Enhancing Spectator Experiences: Lowering the field by four feet to create the unique “bleacher effect” required precise excavation and structural work. By embracing this challenge, we created a design that gives spectators unparalleled visibility and brings them closer to the action, fostering a more intimate and engaging atmosphere for families and fans.

  • Strengthening the Field’s Infrastructure: Managing water drainage for a sunken field posed a significant technical challenge. Our team designed and implemented advanced drainage solutions to prevent waterlogging and ensure the field remains playable in all weather conditions. This not only protects the field’s surface but also extends its lifespan, making it a lasting asset for the community.

  • Creating a Professional-Grade Environment: Turning a disused space into a top-tier facility required a meticulous approach to every detail, from concrete retaining walls to spectator amenities. By addressing each hurdle with precision and care, we transformed the field into a professional-grade environment that inspires pride in the Napoleon community and beyond.

The collaborative effort, valued at over one million dollars, is a testament to what can be achieved when businesses like Vernon Nagel, alongside community leaders, step up to support their neighbors.

Recognizing the Impact of the Field’s Revitalization

The renovation has not gone unnoticed. During its annual meeting and reception, the Henry County Community Improvement Corporation (CIC) honored the project with a Community Growth Award, recognizing the impact it has had on the local community.
